Welcome

John_GramlichI’m an associate director at the Pew Research Center in Washington, D.C. The Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan, non-advocacy “fact tank” that carries out surveys, demographic analyses and other social science research. In my role as an associate director, I oversee the Center’s data journalism blog. I also regularly write about subjects including criminal justice, legal affairs and immigration.

Before joining the Center in 2016, I was a research officer at The Pew Charitable Trusts (the Pew Research Center’s parent organization), where I wrote reports, fact sheets and other publications with a focus on the U.S. correctional system.

Earlier in my career, I was a journalist at news outlets including CQ Roll Call, Stateline.org and The Baltimore Sun. As a reporter at CQ Roll Call, I covered the U.S. House and Senate Judiciary Committees, the Justice Department and the Supreme Court. At Stateline.org, I reported on national trends in state government policy and politics, focusing on criminal justice and other issues. At The Baltimore Sun, I was a morning news producer, helping manage the daily flow of news stories, photos, audio and video clips to the newspaper’s website.

My research and reporting has been cited or reprinted in publications including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post and Rolling Stone magazine. I have appeared as a guest on broadcast outlets including CNN, PBS, C-SPAN, Al-Jazeera, NPR and Sirius XM.

I received my M.A. in journalism and public affairs from American University and my B.A. in English from Pennsylvania State University. The nation’s capital has been my home since 2005.
